Book Review: Firefight

For the Young Hoosier Book Nominees for next year, Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart has been added to the list, and boy am I stoked! So, I already read and reviewed Steelheart, but now I've read Sanderson's sequel, Firefight, which continues right where Steelheart left off, and it's is phenomenal!

Firefight
by Brandon Sanderson
Firefight (Reckoners, #2)

David has beaten and killed Steelheart, the dictator with superpowers that has ruled Newcago for years.  He has joined the Reckoners and their fight to destroy everyone in the country with superpowers--he does have a knack for finding their weaknesses.

But in Steelheart, David found out that the girl he was falling for, IS an Epic (with superpowers) AND Megan was also working for Steelheart.  After fleeing, David and the Reckoners are determined to find Megan--but for different reasons.  The Reckoners want her dead, but David believes that maybe it's possible some Epics can be the good guys.

All at the same time, the group heads to what used to be New York City, to take down Regalia and Obliteration, the two strongest Epics in the area.  David has to keep the trust of the Reckoners, but find Megan to stop the duo together.

I love this premise for a story, no matter how far-fetched some of the elements seem to be.  This is definitely Science Fiction gone wrong.  We now live with people with superpowers, but not ONE of them is good--no Batman or Superman here.  David is an ordinary teenager out to avenge his father, and he gets pulled in to one of the greatest battles of all time.

Megan, Firefight, is lucky enough to have this book titled after her, however, the book isn't just about Megan and her relationship with David.  Sanderson chooses this title because it deals directly with the main character, but he also knows he can't make a whole plot based on teenage love--instead he brings in two new supervillains that test the boundaries of love and trust.  We FINALLY get a glimpse at Calamity, and I am now on the edge of my seat to REALLY meet him in:

Calamity (Reckoners, #3)
