Book Review: Anything Can Happen

Another great LGBTQ story for the real world:

Anything Could Happen
by Will Walton

Anything Could Happen

Tretch lives in a small town, where everybody knows everybody.  He lives a fairly normal life, but Tretch is gay, and has yet to tell anyone in his life.  Not only does he hide this secret, he is also in love with his best friend, Matt.

Instead of coming out, Tretch dances in the privacy of his room, pretends to go on dates, and do normal "straight guy" stuff, but there's only so long he can hide before he needs to be honest with everyone.

This book is anticlimactic--in a GREAT way.  Coming out or living life as a homosexual is not this great dramatic story that always involves tears and fighting, etc.  Tretch is a great kid, has a great friend, and is normal in every way.  So when he DOES start to tell people, it's not a production with waterworks and dramatic flair.  He is honest, in a private setting, and people accept it.

Not only is this book realistically painting a picture of a real boy trying to deal with hiding a secret in a small town, the story collects normal teenager problems--what to wear, how to deal with a minor bully, meeting with family, dealing with the stress of every day life.  This book is real to the core, and because of that, completely relate-able.  There is no need for a lot of pomp and circumstance.  Walton keeps the story fueled by pure real life, and I absolutely loved it.
