Defiance
by C.J. Redwine

Defiance (Defiance #1)

In a world where women are inferior, taught to sew and cook and little else, Rachel is a gem.  She has learned to fight under the tutelage of her father.  She has become a strong, independent woman, but when her father goes missing in the Wasteland, Rachel is put under the protection of her father's apprentice, Logan, who she may or may not be in love with.

Together, Rachel and Logan devise a plan to get outside the city walls to search for Rachel's father...but there are foul creatures hiding under the Earth that could emerge at any time, killing anyone in their path.

At the same time, the Commander of their city is up to something most foul.  He has a way of controlling the creatures outside the wall, but he also controls everything and everyone inside the walls.  Rachel must outwit the commander and keep her father's package away from the Commander before he uses it for much worse things than the oppression of women.

This is a classic downtrodden girl must fight for her rights, all the while being in love with someone close to her family and win the war against the evil leader--but it's very well done, and with new twists to the story.  The creatures in the Wasteland remind me of the movie, Tremors, from the 1980s, which are terrifying themselves.

Rachel's relationship with Logan seems solid enough at the beginning of the story--they seem to hate each other, but as they spend time together, they begin to let go, and realize how they truly feel about one another...where, at one point, the mush gets to be too much, but I suppose in light of the rest of the story being incredible, I can let that go.

Regardless, Redwine introduces new creatures, new towns, new ideas, and a new setting for a great trilogy! Get them all through the E-book catalog!
