I'm not sure if ALL Librarians love cats...but I have yet to meet one that DOESN'T like them.  Anyway, for your nerdy librarian viewing pleasure:

New Displays!

Out with the old, in with the new! I have some new displays in the YA section--and they are both HANDS ON! So come on down and add to the teen area!

Wall of Happiness
There is so much animosity on FB, in school, and at home... I just want to focus on the GOOD stuff! So come to the teen section, take a post-it or notecard, write something that makes you happy and stick it up!

 Missing Book Title
Can you match up the slips of paper with the book title!? I think these are pretty easy, so I may have to make the next ones harder.  All have velcro backing so we can do them over and over again!

Book Review: An Ember in the Ashes

I just read an AHHHHMazing book that is right up there with Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes.  You definitely have to come get this one!

An Ember in the Ashes
by Sabaa Tahir

An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes, #1)

Elias has been trained his whole life to be a ruthless "Mask," the soldiers in Serra and Blackcliff that have spent years oppressing the "Scholars"...scholars like Laia.

When Laia's brother is taken in the middle of the night, she finds the rebels and begs them for help.  And they agree--IF Laia becomes the slave to the most ruthless Mask of all.  Fearing for her life, and being brutally beaten and burned on a daily basis, Laia works to find information to help the resistance so they will, in turn, find her brother.

But when Elias and Laia meet, sparks fly, of course.  Elias doesn't believe in the oppression of the Scholars...or anyone, for that matter.  Elias vows to help Laia, but neither of them can really tell the other the truth about who they are.

When the Trials arrive to name a new Emperor, Elias is one of the chosen 4, and he must fight for his life, the throne, and his allegiance.  He must choose between life and the life of those he loves.

This is an incredibly solidly woven tale.  Tahir is a master storyteller, and this book may be my favorite of 2015. Elias and Laia clearly have feelings for one another, but their stations in life prohibit that from ever coming to fruition, so the romantic tension is painfully sweet!

At the same time, trust is challenged, and the reader is left trying to figure out who is telling the truth, and if Laia can trust the rebellion, the master swordsman, Elias, or her fellow slaves.  Everyone is looking out for one person--themselves.

This story has legend and lore, love, mystery, revolution, evil forces, and the strength and will to do the right thing--In a nutshell--you MUST read this!

Book #2 comes out next August! SQUEEE!!!
A Torch Against the Night (An Ember in the Ashes, #2)

20 Problems Only Book Lovers Understand

Last week we asked on Facebook and Twitter: What's a problem only book lovers understand? We got over 1,000 amazing responses! So even if non-book lovers don't get your struggle, remember—you're among friends here.

2. "Feeling sad for people who don't really exist." (Kimberly Moniz)

3. "RUNNING OUT OF SHELF SPACE!!!" (Kim)

4. "Getting interrupted when you are on the last few pages of a book." (Sobe Daya)

6. "Wanting every book in a library section but knowing it is impossible to read all of them." (Richard Azia)

7. "Waiting so long for a sequel that you forget what happened in the first book." (Jessica Luong)

8. "When you're lying in bed and it's all cold in your room—and the hand holding the book freezes to death, even though the rest of you is warm under the blankets." (Alina Marie Swan)

10. "Trying to keep the book dry while reading in the bath." (Patricia Boland)

13. "When someone borrows your book and doesn't return it for ages!" (Pallavi B)

15. "Getting to a 'can't stop reading' spot in the book and it's 3:00am." (Joan Chesley)

16. "When you have a book with you, but it's not the one you wanted to read right then." (Virginia Osborne)

17. "Being forced to stop reading by other obligations, but choosing to ignore those obligations. Then getting in trouble." (Feel Like Fangirling)

18. "Packing for a trip and never being able to bring enough books." (Erika Gallion)

19. "Having a book fall on your face because you're reading on your back while holding the book up." (Manuel Cedillo)

20. And the ultimate book lovers' dilemma: "So many books, so little time." (Navy Reading)

Book Review: Sweet

From the Monument 14 author, comes another totally sweeeet new series!

Sweet
by Emmy Laybourne

Sweet

Laurel was begged by her best friend, Viv, to go on an all-expense paid cruise--only one catch--it's a cruise to lose weight. The new diet powder, Solu, is all the rage, and to kick off the upcoming launch, the creators of this miracle drug are hosting a cruise for the first 500 customers to try it out!

Tom Fiorelli, heartthrob of television gets to host a TV documentary about the cruise, but hates every minute of it...and he doesn't buy into this new drug.  He also doesn't believe Laurel needs it (*wink wink)

But when all the passengers who have taken the powder with their food start acting weird...and violent, the miracle weight loss drug goes from miraculous to addictive and dangerous.  Can Laurel and Tom fight the masses of violent dieters in time to get word to the mainland?

This book was a one-nighter read.  Emmy Laybourne is such a talented author.  She writes what appeals to teens, and she does it in a way that isn't completely coated with sugary sweetness or droll that makes it the same as every other YA book.  She takes certain ideas that have been thought up before, and she creates a whole new twist to each situation.

I have not read a book like this before, that I can think of, and I really like the message Laybourne is sending out about weight.  Laurel is curvaceous, but she is confident and her confidence in her appearance is part of what intrigues Tom Fiorelli.  Being a little overweight or curvy, but confident and smart is WAY above being a size 0 and shallow, always worrying about your weight.

Thank you Emmy for this great story! I hope all the teens come get this at the library! I have heard there will be a book 2 :D

Disney Club!

So the teens wanted a new program--and they wanted it to be Disney. So I created Disney Club! This was a one-time program, but if teens reallllly like it and want to come, I can make it either monthly or bi-monthly! I had a great time preparing this program, and the teens that did come, seemed REALLY excited to be there!

We had Disney Snacks:

We watched Disney Short Films:

We played Disney Kahoot online:

And we played a racing Disney Trivia Game!:
 (only mild injuries were sustained...)

Thank you teens for a fantabulous night! I can't wait to do it again!

Book Review: The Hunted

Nothing like a good continuation of a zombie-like book...especially where all the kids are fine, but the adults are the sickos!

The Hunted
by Charlie Higson

The Hunted (The Enemy #6)

Ella has escaped the sickos...but she is the only one.  When she runs into ScarFace, she thinks her life is over--this adult will kill her.  But he doesn't.  Instead ScarFace takes care of Ella, and when their farm is attacked, Ella realizes ScarFace CAN talk...and he is only 15.

Together, the two must survive any way they can.

On the other hand, Ed (Ella's brother) is still in London, but determined to find his sister.  He rallies a team together to search for her and bring her back to safety.  But nothing ever goes to plan.  Will they be able to locate Ella with no evidence of her travels? Will everyone who set out survive the SICKOS?

This 6th installment of The Enemy series is chilling, to say the least.  We FINALLY start to understand what happened to spread this disease turning anyone over 16 into zombie-like creatures.  We have two different stories happening at the same time--Ella on one side, and her brother Ed on the other.  You are left in suspense wondering if the siblings will EVER see each other again.

This story is VERY gory and quite violent, so I suggest you read with caution.  Yes, they are killing zombies, but make sure you are old enough to handle what's happening--it MAY give you nightmares!

Regardless, Higson is an incredible writer and I can't wait for the next, and LAST book in the series!

The End (The Enemy, #7)
